A house collapse in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night has resulted in the deaths of six people, including five children. The incident occurred amid heavy rains in the city. According to officials, the collapse happened at 8:30 p.m. at Janata Nagar chawl in Mankhurd, where two to three tenements forming part of a three-storey structure came crashing down.
Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, BMC’s Ward Staff, and ambulance services were quickly deployed to the scene. The injured were rescued and taken to Rajawadi Hospital and Shatabdi Hospital for treatment. The victims who lost their lives include a 32-year-old woman and four children aged between two and 14 years, who were declared dead at Shatabdi Hospital.
A seven-year-old boy also died during treatment at Rajawadi Hospital, while the condition of a 24-year-old man is reported to be stable. The incident occurred on a day when several areas in Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a ‘red alert’ for Konkan and eastern Gujarat, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days. The IMD has warned of widespread rain across the country due to the formation of the season’s first depression.
The northern limit of monsoon runs through Jamnagar (Gujarat), Udaipur, Ajmer and Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan), Hisar (Haryana) and Bathinda (Punjab). The normal date for monsoon to cover the entire country is July 8; this year, it may be close to the normal date or slightly delayed. Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab, and some more parts of Rajasthan and north Arabian Sea during next three days.
