Doctors and experts have emphasized the need for genetic testing to become an integral part of routine glaucoma care in India. This would facilitate early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and family-based screening. The call was made at the Genetics-enabled Social Innovation for Glaucoma Health & Treatment (GENE-SIGHT) 2026 conference in Kolkata, which brought together ophthalmologists, geneticists, researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives. Advances in genomics have reached a stage where they can significantly improve glaucoma management, but experts say wider adoption would require collaboration among healthcare providers, researchers, industry, and policymakers.
Prof Arijit Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Precision Health at the University of Salford, UK, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the crucial role genetics can play in identifying individuals at high risk before irreversible vision loss occurs. _
