A two-storey building collapsed in the Industrial Area Phase-2 of Chandigarh on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of two people. According to officials, four individuals were initially rescued from the debris and taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32. Later, two more people were pulled out and rushed to the same hospital. Two people have died in the building collapse incident, confirmed Ravneet Kaur, Director-Principal at GMCH-32.

The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Vishal Guglani, stated that three people are undergoing treatment and their condition is stable. Rescue teams from the firefighters, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were dispatched to the scene and conducted a rescue operation that lasted over five hours. The area was cordoned off, and heavy earth-moving machines were used to aid in the rescue efforts.

Locals reported that a portion of the building, which was being used as a scrap godown, collapsed with a loud thud. Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi, who visited the site, revealed that the building was old and under renovation when it suddenly collapsed. An investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the building collapse.

This incident comes after a vacant building collapsed in Sector-17 last year, which was declared unsafe by authorities prior to the incident.
