Assam Police have arrested a man in Dibrugarh district for allegedly demanding extortion money and acting as a linkman for the banned militant outfit ULFA. The accused, identified as Mondeep Changmai, is a resident of Changmai Gaon in the Lengeri area of Dibrugarh district. According to police, Changmai is suspected of acting as a linkman for the banned outfit and was allegedly involved in extortion activities.
Based on the allegations, Tingkhong Police had registered a case against him before launching an investigation that led to his arrest. He has been booked in connection with Tingkhong Police Station Case No. 48/2026 under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Following his arrest, Changmai was interrogated by investigators and later produced before the competent court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the extent of his alleged involvement and to identify any possible associates. Officials have not disclosed further details regarding the alleged extortion demands or the nature of his purported links with the banned outfit.
