The Naga People’s Union, Imphal (NPUI), has announced a mass sit-in protest in Imphal on July 7 over the killing of six Naga civilians. The protest will be held at Ema Market, Khwairamband Bazaar, beginning at 10:30 am. In a statement, the NPUI said the protest is being organised against the killing of the six Naga civilians, who were allegedly abducted on May 13, 2026, from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district.
The union expressed its opposition to the arrest of a Meitei village guard, identified as AT, describing him as innocent. The NPUI appealed to both Naga and Meitei communities to participate in the protest wearing their traditional attire. Following intensive combing operations, security forces recovered the mutilated bodies of the six men on June 10, nearly a month after their alleged abduction.
Amid widespread public outrage over the killings, the Manipur government handed the case over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for investigation. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the case so far. The bodies of the six victims remain at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) mortuary, as their families have refused to claim them until those responsible are brought to justice.
