In a significant blow to the Mamata Banerjee faction of the Trinamool Congress, Chandrima Bhattacharya, the party’s Bengal State president, has resigned from her position. The resignation, which took place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, comes barely a month after she was entrusted with the crucial organisational responsibility following the party’s Assembly election debacle. Bhattacharya’s resignation has triggered speculations about her future ties with the party.
In a letter addressed to the Trinamool Congress chairperson, Bhattacharya also stepped down from all other posts she held in the party. Furthermore, she withdrew herself as the party’s authorised signatory of its accounts maintained in various banks and as Mamata Banerjee’s authorised point person to appear before the Election Commission. Bhattacharya’s resignation is seen as a major setback for the Mamata Banerjee faction, which has been facing internal conflicts and challenges in recent times.
Bhattacharya, a former Minister in the erstwhile Mamata Banerjee government and a prominent leader of the party, had led its women’s wing. She was named State president at the party’s national working committee meeting held at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on June 5, replacing senior leader Subrata Bakshi. Bhattacharya’s resignation has raised questions about the party’s future and the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.
Bhattacharya, a three-time MLA of the State, had lost to BJP’s Sourav Sikdar at the Dum Dum Uttar constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections.
