The Directorate of Economics & Statistics celebrated National Statistics Day 2026 at its headquarters in Itanagar on Sunday, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of statistics in socioeconomic planning and evidence-based policymaking. The National Statistics Day is observed annually on 29 June to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the pioneer of modern statistics in India. This year’s central theme, ‘Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,’ highlighted the growing significance of leveraging administrative records generated through government departments for producing timely, reliable, and high-quality statistics to support effective governance and informed decision-making.

Economics & Statistics Director B Megu elaborated on the concept of administrative data, explaining that it refers to data routinely collected by government departments and agencies during the course of administering various programmes, schemes, and public services. Such data, when systematically compiled, validated, and integrated into the official statistical system, can serve as a valuable resource for planning, monitoring, and evaluating developmental initiatives. During the event, the directorate gave Assistant Director of Economics & Statistics Alberton Jirdo a warm farewell on his retirement after 37 years of exemplary service.

Colleagues recalled his commitment, professionalism, and invaluable contributions to the growth and functioning of the department over nearly four decades. A memento and tokens of appreciation were presented to him as a mark of respect and recognition for his long and distinguished service. The field operation division of the regional National Statistics Office (NSO) also observed the National Statistics Day with the central theme.

The NSO’s Field Operation Division Assistant Director Ng PK Luwang highlighted the importance of administrative data in evidence-based policymaking, improving public service delivery, and supporting the sustainable development of Arunachal Pradesh. The programme was attended by all officials and staff of the regional office.
