Vellayil in Kozhikode city is set to undergo a significant transformation with two major development projects worth ₹5 crore. The Avikkal Thodu development project has been allocated ₹3 crore, while the Vellayil Fishing Harbour renovation project has been earmarked ₹2 crore by the State government. The projects were announced by Chief Minister V.D.
Satheesan in his reply to the 2026–27 Budget presentation. Avikkal Thodu, an urban canal in the city, has become heavily polluted with untreated sewage and solid waste, raising public health and environmental concerns among residents. The canal will be properly covered with slabs, and the vacant space next to it will be developed into a recreation area, according to Kozhikode North MLA K. Jayanth. He added that thousands of fisherfolk depend on the Vellayil Fishing Harbour, which is currently outdated and ill-equipped.
The renovated harbour will have all essential amenities, including restrooms. The breakwater and jetty of the harbour will be extended, and a separate building will be constructed for storage. Basic facilities such as drinking water will be ensured at the harbour, said Vellayil division councillor Soufiya N.P.
A.P. Abdullakutty, president of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed the project and suggested that the funds should be strategically utilised to transform the harbour into a modern, world-class facility. He also proposed considering the scope of establishing a children’s museum on fishing, which could enhance the area’s tourism potential.
The renovation of Lions Park, being undertaken by the Kozhikode Corporation, is in its final stages. Together, these developments will significantly transform the beach area, benefiting residents, added Mr. Jayanth.
