A 10-member delegation from the Department of New and Renewable Energy, Government of Nagaland, recently visited Tripura to study the state’s implementation of renewable energy programmes, with a special focus on the PM-KUSUM scheme. The delegation was led by Adviser for New and Renewable Energy Er. Picto Shohe and included Secretary Linda Solo, Director Er.

James Khala and other departmental officials. The team inspected several renewable energy projects implemented by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), including off-grid solar water pumping systems, solarisation of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps, and an 80-kWp grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant under the Virtual Net Metering arrangement. The team also visited a community solar water purification plant, solar high-mast and street lighting systems, a 500-kWp grid-connected solar PV power plant developed under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model at Tripura University, a biogas plant at the Ramakrishna Mission Complex in Amtali, and a 100-kW solar power plant at the Land Port in Agartala. During their visit, the delegation interacted with officials and beneficiaries to gain first-hand insights into the implementation of off-grid solar water pumps, solar-powered irrigation systems and the Green Village initiative.

They also met Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath to discuss opportunities for strengthening cooperation in the renewable energy sector. A review meeting chaired by Power Department Secretary Abhishek Chandra, IAS, was held in the presence of TREDA Director Debabrata Sukla Das and other senior officials. The discussions focused on project implementation, policy initiatives, financing mechanisms and avenues for inter-state collaboration.

On the second day, the delegation met Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shyamal Das to explore collaboration in renewable energy awareness, research, skill development and capacity-building programmes for the Northeast. The team also visited the university’s solar power plant and the biogas facility at the Ramakrishna Mission Complex. The Nagaland delegation appreciated Tripura’s achievements in promoting renewable energy, particularly in sustainable irrigation, clean drinking water, rural electrification and community infrastructure.

It also praised the financial and technical support extended to beneficiaries, which it said had played a key role in the successful implementation of renewable energy projects. Officials said the visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two states and facilitate the adoption of innovative clean energy solutions in Nagaland, contributing to sustainable development, energy security and a greener future for the Northeast.
