A man has been arrested in connection with the cyber fraud case involving Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee. The accused, identified as Mokuleshar Reza, was taken into custody by the Cyber Crime division of Kolkata Police from Rangapani area in Assam on Friday. According to a senior police officer, the arrest comes almost a year after Reza allegedly stole lakhs of rupees from Banerjee’s bank account.
The incident occurred in November 2025, with approximately Rs 56 lakh disappearing from the account. The money was withdrawn from the Calcutta High Court branch of a state-owned bank. The police investigation revealed that the accused disguised himself as a lawyer to gain access to the bank.
He then changed the MP’s registrar number linked to the bank account, allowing him to take control of the account and withdraw the funds. A significant portion of the stolen money was used to purchase gold, which the police are currently working to recover. The accused will be produced in a city court on Saturday.
Notably, the state-owned bank had returned the money to the MP a year ago. Banerjee had expressed concerns at the time, stating that he may have received the refund due to his position as an MP and questioning what would have happened if a common citizen had been the victim. The police had been investigating the matter since receiving a complaint from the Trinamool Congress MP.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, although Banerjee is yet to make an official statement. The police are continuing their efforts to recover the stolen assets and bring the perpetrator to justice.
