The District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Tura, observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026 on Friday at the Rongram Horti Hub Multi Facility Centre, bringing together officials from various government departments, educational institutions, and members of the local community to spread awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and the need to combat illicit drug trafficking.
Observed annually on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, established by the United Nations, aims to strengthen global action and cooperation towards achieving a world free from drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking. The observance also seeks to educate people on the harmful effects of drugs, promote prevention and rehabilitation, and encourage communities and institutions to work together in addressing drug-related challenges.
The programme began with the registration of participants, followed by an introductory address by District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Tura, Smt. M. O. T. Sangma. The event was compered by Smt. Cherandha A. Sangma, GS, DHEW, Tura.
Awareness sessions were conducted by representatives from the Medical Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Tura, and the Police Department, who spoke on the ill effects of drug abuse, the availability of free legal aid for drug addicts, and measures to curb illicit drug trafficking.
Adding a cultural dimension to the programme, interns from Don Bosco College and Tura Government College presented a welcome song and a skit highlighting the social impact of drug abuse and the importance of prevention.
The programme also featured an address by the Block Development Officer (BDO), Rongram C&RD Block, who attended as the chief guest. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Draisbon M. Sangma, Field Level Officer, DHEW, Tura.
The observance aimed to strengthen public awareness, encourage collective responsibility, and promote a united effort among government agencies, educational institutions, and citizens in building a healthier and drug-free society.
