Indian Railways has successfully conducted a trial run of the country’s first hydrogen train between Delhi and Jind. This trial run is part of the train’s safety and performance assessments ahead of its planned launch. The trial focused on evaluating emergency braking distance and oscillation.
Earlier, a trial run was conducted between Sonipat and Jind in Haryana. With the introduction of this hydrogen train into commercial service, India will join a select group of countries, including Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China, that operate hydrogen-powered trains. The Railway Board approved the introduction of the country’s first hydrogen-powered trainset last month.
In a letter dated May 22, 2026, the Railway Board communicated its approval for the introduction of a 10-car hydrogen train set, which will operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Delhi Division. The trainset will be maintained at Shakurbasti. The successful trial run of the hydrogen train is a major step towards its commercial launch.
