The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reached a significant milestone in its railway electrification programme with the successful energisation of a 132 kV transmission line connecting the Haflong Grid Sub-Station (GSS) and the New Haflong Traction Sub-Station (NHLG TSS). This achievement marks the completion of a crucial component of the railway electrification project on the strategically important Lumding–Badarpur hill section. The transmission line was energised at 2.22 pm on June 17, paving the way for electric train operations along the challenging hill route.
This route serves as a vital rail link connecting the Barak Valley and several northeastern states with the rest of the country. With the successful energisation of the transmission line, all major physical works related to the traction power supply infrastructure have been completed. The project has now entered its final phase, and the section is expected to be commissioned for electric train operations in the coming weeks after mandatory testing, inspections, and trial runs are completed.
The electrification of the Lumding–Badarpur hill section is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, enhance hauling capacity, lower maintenance costs, and contribute to more environmentally sustainable railway operations. The NFR remains committed to modernising infrastructure and providing faster, greener, and more efficient rail services across the Northeast.
