The Manipur government’s directorate of information and public relations (DIPR) recently hosted a one-day workshop on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and media fact-checking. The event, held at the DIPR auditorium in Imphal, brought together journalists, media professionals, and government officials to discuss the growing role of AI in the industry. Secretary (IPR) Hungyo Worshang emphasized that while AI is increasingly being used in journalism, it should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for journalists.

Worshang noted that AI can assist media professionals in tasks such as data analysis, information verification, and content processing. However, he stressed that the responsibility of ensuring the accuracy, credibility, and authenticity of information ultimately lies with the journalists. He also cautioned that AI-generated content must be carefully analyzed and verified before being shared with the public.

According to IPR director Th Charanjeet Singh, the workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of journalists and concerned officials regarding emerging AI technologies. Singh highlighted the growing challenges posed by misinformation, deep fakes, and unverified content circulating online, underscoring the need for responsible use of AI in media. He emphasized that AI is becoming an integral part of newsroom operations, helping journalists prepare reports, curate content, and automate routine tasks.

During the technical sessions, experts discussed the fundamentals of AI, its role in journalism, and the challenges of misinformation. They also demonstrated how AI-based tools can improve workflow efficiency and support fact-checking efforts. The workshop concluded with discussions on the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence in modern journalism and media practices.
