The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, recently organised a one-day workshop on ‘Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Journalism and Media Fact-Checking’ at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal. The event was graced by Secretary, Information and Public Relations (IPR), Government of Manipur, Hungyo Worshang, as Chief Guest and Director, IPR, Government of Manipur, Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, as President. Journalism is fundamentally about gathering accurate information and disseminating it responsibly to the public, Hungyo Worshang stated, highlighting the growing relevance of Artificial Intelligence in journalism.
He noted that information now reaches the public instantly through mobile phones and online platforms, presenting both opportunities and challenges for journalists. Worshang emphasised that AI should be viewed as a tool that can support and strengthen journalism, rather than a competitor. Technological advancements cannot be resisted, he stressed, and media professionals should learn to effectively manage and utilise AI. AI can assist journalists in data analysis, information verification, and various other journalistic tasks, but the role of journalists remains indispensable, particularly in verifying facts and ensuring the authenticity of information.
Worshang also highlighted the importance of critical analysis and fact-checking of information generated by AI before it is disseminated to the public. Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh stated that the workshop aimed to enhance and update the knowledge of journalists and government officials on the application of Artificial Intelligence in journalism.
He emphasized the importance of responsible AI usage and requirements of verification and fact-checking information obtained from social media and other online sources. The Director also expressed concern over the rise of deep fake and AI-generated misinformation, stressing that journalists must remain vigilant to safeguard the credibility and integrity of journalism. Dr. Charanjeet Singh noted that Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being adopted across different sectors, including journalism. AI can assist media professionals in preparing news reports, curating and presenting content, and automating routine tasks, thereby improving efficiency and productivity.
The workshop featured technical sessions by Dr. Haobam Joyremba Singh, Dr. Hanjabam Saratchandra, and Dr. Angom Buboo Singh, who shared their expertise and practical experiences on the application of Artificial Intelligence in journalism and media fact-checking. The event was attended by journalists from various media organisations, officials of the Department, and media professionals.
