The European Union has lifted its negative travel advisory for Assam, with the exception of three districts under the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, or AFSPA. This decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday. According to Sarma, EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin informed the Assam chief secretary that the restriction was lifted on Friday.
The three districts still under the negative travel advisory are Charaideo, Tinsukia, and Sivasagar. All 27 EU member-states have lifted the restrictions for their citizens traveling to Assam, with the exception of these three districts. The state government is now working to have the US and Canada lift their travel restrictions for Assam. Australia and Japan had previously withdrawn similar advisories for their citizens last year.
The lifting of the EU’s negative travel advisory is seen as a significant development, particularly following the recent visit of EU diplomats. This decision is a strong vote of confidence in Assam and is expected to strengthen tourism, business, and people-to-people ties. Sarma expressed his gratitude to Delphin for his support in this matter. The lifting of the negative travel advisory is a positive step forward for Assam, and the state government is hopeful that it will lead to increased engagement and cooperation with the EU.
