Monsoon Progress and Rainfall Deficit
The southwest monsoon has been progressing slowly across India, resulting in a significant rainfall deficit of 41%. According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) region-wise departure rainfall map, the deficits in various regions are as follows:
- Central India: 67%
- East and northeast India: 42%
- Southern peninsula: 22%
- Northwest India: 6%
Heatwave Conditions in Telangana
Telangana is experiencing intense heatwave conditions, with several districts recording high temperatures even in the third week of June. According to GNRS Srinivas, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Centre Hyderabad, the slow-moving monsoon and lack of widespread cloud cover are the reasons behind the heatwave.
Flooding Concerns in Puducherry
Residents in Puducherry are demanding measures to prevent flooding in their locality during the monsoon season. The construction of a road overbridge over the Uppanar drain has raised concerns among residents, who fear that it may cause more flooding in the area.
Water Supply Concerns in Goa
Goa is facing a water supply crisis, with the state’s drinking water stock expected to last only about a month. The State Water Supply Department Minister, Subhash Phal Desai, has assured that there is enough water to fulfill the requirement for a month, but strict advisories will be issued to ensure that the existing water is not exhausted before the expected rainfall.
Weather Conditions in Delhi and Karnataka
Delhi woke up to partly cloudy skies on Friday morning, with a yellow alert for thunderstorm. Karnataka is experiencing patchy rainfall, with a departure of -35% in June rainfall pattern.
