Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has expressed concern over the growing burden posed by the influx of displaced people from neighbouring Myanmar, Manipur and Bangladesh, saying the situation continues to place significant pressure on the state’s resources.
Speaking to EastMojo on the sidelines of the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Lalduhoma said Mizoram is currently sheltering nearly 40,000 displaced persons who have fled conflict and instability in the region.
“For Mizoram, especially for Mizoram, it is really a matter of concern because right now we have almost 40,000 displaced people coming from Myanmar, Manipur and Bangladesh,” the chief minister said.
He noted that accommodating such a large number of displaced persons has created substantial challenges for the state government.

“It is an extra burden on our shoulders. We have to feed them, we have to educate their children, we have to shelter them. So it’s a lot of responsibility for us,” he said.
When asked about the future course of action and possible solutions, Lalduhoma said the situation remains highly unpredictable and is largely dependent on developments across the border, particularly in Myanmar.
“You can’t predict it. It depends on the geopolitical condition in Myanmar. It’s very, very fluid right now. So you can’t predict it,” he remarked.
The chief minister’s comments come amid continuing instability in Myanmar following the military takeover, as well as ethnic unrest in parts of Manipur, both of which have triggered waves of displacement into Mizoram due to strong ethnic and cultural ties shared across borders.
The issue of cross-border displacement and illegal immigration has increasingly emerged as a concern for several northeastern states, with leaders highlighting the social, economic and administrative challenges arising from the prolonged humanitarian situation.
