Shillong : The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-II (MDA-II) on Wednesday officially announced its support for National People’s Party (NPP) leader James PK Sangma as the coalition’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election slated for June 18.
The decision was reached during a meeting of leaders of the alliance’s constituent parties, chaired by Chief Minister and MDA-II leader Conrad K Sangma. Representatives of all coalition partners participated in the deliberations.
Addressing the media after the meeting, MDA-II Parliamentary Party Secretary and West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh said various alliance partners had initially suggested names from their respective parties for consideration. However, with no unanimous agreement emerging on a common nominee, the coalition opted to follow the established convention of supporting the candidate proposed by the largest party in the alliance.
Accordingly, all constituents agreed to endorse James PK Sangma, whose candidature was put forward by the NPP.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma described the decision as a collective one taken by all alliance partners and stressed that James PK Sangma should now be regarded as the official candidate of the MDA-II rather than of any individual party.
On the issue of a party whip, the Chief Minister said there was no necessity for one at the alliance level since all partners had already expressed their support for the nominee. He added that any whip issued by individual parties would merely formalise instructions to their legislators to vote for the alliance-backed candidate.
The meeting also discussed the forthcoming by-election to the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency. Coalition partners resolved that each party would be free to determine its own course of action regarding the by-poll, including contesting the election, extending support to another candidate, remaining neutral, or abstaining from participation altogether.
James PK Sangma is expected to file his nomination papers on June 5 at 2:30 pm.
Concluding the meeting, Conrad Sangma called upon alliance partners to work in coordination and ensure effective implementation of the decisions adopted by the coalition.
