Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday inaugurated the Mizo Ginger USP Mission Projects, the Price Support Scheme for Arhar (Tur), Sesame and Sunflower, and the NCEL Ginger Export Awareness Workshop at YRC, Falkland.

Addressing farmers, cooperative representatives and officials, the Chief Minister said ginger remains one of Mizoram’s most important agricultural crops and has been identified as the state’s Unique Selling Proposition (USP) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

He noted that although Mizoram ginger is smaller in size than varieties grown elsewhere, its superior quality and pharmaceutical-grade characteristics provide it with a distinct advantage in domestic and international markets.

Lalduhoma stressed the need to move beyond the sale of raw ginger and focus on processing and value addition to increase farmers’ incomes and promote sustainable cultivation practices.

To support this transition, the state government, with assistance from the Ministry of DoNER, has launched a Sustainable Cultivation and Post-Harvest Management Project. Under the initiative, four modern ginger processing units will be established in Champhai district, Mizoram’s largest ginger-producing region.

The project, funded with ₹30.13 crore from the Ministry of DoNER, is expected to benefit around 20,000 ginger-growing households and generate approximately 100 jobs. The Chief Minister also thanked Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for supporting the initiative.

The Chief Minister said the government aims to position Mizoram ginger more prominently in national and international markets by leveraging its Geographical Indication (GI) tag and reputation for quality. Plans are also being developed to produce higher-value products such as ginger oil and other processed ginger-based commodities.

As part of efforts to improve export readiness, the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) has been engaged to provide training and awareness programmes on export procedures, quality standards and market access opportunities.

The Chief Minister also announced the implementation of the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme in Mizoram for Arhar (Tur), Sesame and Sunflower from the current harvest season.

Under the scheme, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) has been fixed at ₹84.50 per kg for Arhar (Tur), ₹103.46 per kg for Sesame and ₹83.43 per kg for Sunflower.

Procurement will be carried out by NAFED in collaboration with the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board through designated collection centres. Payments will be transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system to ensure transparency and eliminate intermediaries.

Lalduhoma said that alongside crops already covered under the state government’s price support initiatives, the inclusion of these three crops under the Central government’s MSP mechanism would provide farmers with greater market security and income assurance.

He urged farmers, farmer producer organisations, cooperative societies and government agencies to work together to ensure the success of the initiatives launched on Tuesday.

The programme was attended by around 250 participants from across the state, including farmers, representatives of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), cooperative societies and government officials. The inauguration was followed by the NCEL Ginger Export Awareness Workshop.
