Arunachal Pradesh Governor KT Parnaik expressed concern over the low rate of prosecution in POCSO cases in the state, calling for a ‘whole of state’ approach to protect women and children. Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Lok Bhavan, the governor advised strengthening the Directorate of Prosecution to expedite delivery of justice. The meeting reviewed the progress of investigations and prosecutions, as well as measures undertaken by the state police for the safety and protection of women and children.
Parnaik reviewed the progress of investigations and prosecutions, and the measures undertaken by the state police for the safety and protection of women and children. The governor expressed deep concern over the rising crimes against women and children, particularly cases registered under the POCSO Act. Such crimes not only inflict lifelong trauma on innocent children and families but also shake the conscience of society.
Every case represents a child whose trust, safety, and future have been compromised, making it imperative for all stakeholders to act with urgency and commitment. The responsibility of protecting women and children cannot rest solely with law enforcement agencies, and the governor sought active participation from all sections of society. At the district level, DCs and SPs must take up the issue in a mission mode and ensure coordinated efforts.
Even a small sense of responsibility and vigilance within communities can bring about a significant positive change. DIG (Crime) Dr Joy Tirkey provided a detailed presentation on crimes against women and children in the state. He briefed the governor on ‘Project Abhaya – A Strategic Police-Public Trust, Awareness and Community Safety Initiative’, a community-oriented programme of the Arunachal Pradesh Police.
The programme aims at strengthening public awareness, building trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies, and enhancing community participation in ensuring the safety and well-being of women and children. Home Principal Secretary Kaling Tayeng, DGP Dr SD Singh Jamwal, Women and Child Development Commissioner Nyali Ete, Prosecution Secretary Nani Grayu and AIGP S Singpho participated in the deliberations and discussed measures to strengthen prevention, investigation, prosecution, and victim support mechanisms.
