Tawang Bans Single-Use PET Water Bottles to Reduce Plastic Waste
In a significant move to promote sustainable consumption practices and minimize plastic waste, the Tawang district administration has issued an order prohibiting the sale, distribution, and supply of single-use PET (polyethylene terephthalate) water bottles with a capacity of less than 2 liters.
The order, issued by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo on Tuesday, will come into effect on July 1 and applies to all government offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, event organizers, hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors, and the general public.
To ensure a smooth transition, the order directs event organizers, government departments, educational institutions, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments to make alternative arrangements, such as installing water dispensers, refill stations, water filters, or using larger-capacity water containers.
The district administration has warned that surprise inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance with the order. Any violations will attract action under the applicable provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Bye-laws, 2023, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. This may include the seizure of prohibited items and the imposition of penalties as prescribed by law.
The administration has sought cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative, which aims to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices in the district.
